Chevrolet-Camaro_Z28_2014_1_webThe New York International Auto Show was the scene for some of the most anticipated new cars. One of these was a model engulfed in speculation – the Camaro Z/28.

Chevrolet was expected to introduce the new Camaro in the North American market, but there were rumours of a larger, more aggressive model after a leaked spec-sheet from GM let loose some details which few really expected. The Z/28 badge is much-revered in the muscle car aficionado ranks, especially those who swear by Chevy. The new Camaro aims to resurrect the glory days in its new avatar. Although it isn’t the most powerful version in the line-up; that honour goes to the 580 PS supercharged ZL1; it packs the high-displacement, high-revving, naturally aspirated 7.0-litre V8 engine from the Corvette. This means over 500 PS and just under 640 Nm of tyre-churning torque. Chevrolet has emphasised on the track nature of the car. It was created to be fast on the straights and equally capable around corners. The three key elements, Chevrolet proudly tell you, are increased grip, increased stopping power and reduced weight; with the Z/28 weighing 136 kg less than the ZL1.

The Camaro was created for a left-hand drive market, and sales are concentrated in the US, but there are several cars being sent to Europe. It, and all muscle cars for that matter, enjoy a global fan following. In countries where duty structure allows for more affordable pricing, there will always be takers. When it comes to right-hand drive versions, there are reports doing the rounds of new versions being developed; the Chevrolet Corvette and Ford Mustang are among those listed. Of course, in India, the market will be very limited and only those with genuine interest and a lot of spare moolah will stick their neck out to obtain one of these rumbling V8-powered monsters for the road.
