The German marque wins four Red Dot Awards in 2013
BMW Group Design has won in four categories at the red dot award: product design 2013 competition. The BMW 1 Series, BMW 3 Series Touring, BMW M6 Gran Coupe, and BMW R 1200 GS motorcycle received red dot design awards in the category “Automotive and Transportation”.
The red dot award was first presented in 1955. its 37-member jury comprises leading individuals from the design and creativity field. The product design 2013 segment saw competition from 1,865 independent designers and large companies from 54 countries.
The BMW M6 was recognised for its combination of aesthetic and athletic appeal, with its design influenced by technical considerations as well as a visually-pleasing appearance. Highlights include large air intakes, standard adaptive LED headlights, CFRP roof with a visible carbon structure, and a dynamic recess in the centre of the roof.
The sporty design of the 3-door BMW 1 Series was appreciated, with highlights including wide doors with frameless windows, “free-standing” side window design, and a low-slung roofline. The BMW 3 Series Touring presented a muscular yet versatile design. Highlights include the “layering” treatment of volumes, i.e. different layers in the architecture of the cabin architecture that put essential functions within easy reach.
The BMW R 1200 GS won accolades for a beautifully designed off-road-capable motorbike, with the GS platform seeing a further evolution with a popular touring enduro bike.
The BMW Group has seen success in the past as well at the red dot awards, with 11 awards in 2012 (two special “best of the best” prizes for the BMW AirFlow2 helmet and Husqvarna Nuda 900 R motorcycle) and two in 2011 (BMW 6 Series Convertible, BMW X3, “best of the best” title for BMW 5 Series Touring).
