After investing USD 280 million (Rs 1,809 crore approx.), Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is all set to roll out the Jeep Compass from their plant in Ranjangaon. This SUV from Jeep is completely made in India and will emerge from the production line later this year.

FCA claim that they have had to invest in quite a bit of new technology and processes to realise the made-in-India dream. At the current rate, they expect to launch the Compass in the third quarter of this year. The Indian customer will also be relieved to hear that the cars manufactured in the plant will be exported to right-hand drive global markets as well, laying to rest any doubts about under-par quality products for the local market.

Kevin Flynn, President and Managing Director, FCA, said, “The local production schedule of the Jeep Compass is fairly on track and we are all set to begin local production of the Jeep brand’s global SUV by June this year.”

Jeep have promised that the Compass will be available in two powertrain options. The 1.4-litre multi-air petrol engine will make upwards of 160 PS and a maximum torque of 250 Nm. The 2.0-litre diesel mill is expected to churn out more than 170 PS and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. Potential owners can heave a sigh of relief as both the engines are compliant with BS-VI regulations surpassing the current BS-IV legislation. Power is fed to all the wheels through either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed Dual Dry Clutch Technology (DDCT) automatic.

The Jeep Active Drive is equipped with Selec Terrain Traction Management System and Driveline Disconnect Technology (DDT). DDT quite literally disconnects power to the rear wheels when its not required, thus increasing fuel-efficiency. Frequency Selective Damping (FSD) allows the SUV to adjust its ride according to road undulations promising to deliver great drive quality. It uses a MacPherson Strut in the front and introduces a Chapman independent rear suspension with up to 200 mm of wheel articulation.

In addition to these smart features, the entire Compass range will feature Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Steering Torque (DST), Hill Start Assist (HSA), adaptive braking lights and panic brake assist as standard across the range.

A wide palette of different trim, powertrain, transmission and colour options seems adequate to cater to the individual tastes of Jeep India’s customers.
