Home / News / Land Rover planning a smaller SUV

LR_Small_webLand Rover is currently enjoying success in every major SUV segment globally.

The new Range Rover line-up has reset the luxury SUV benchmark while their Range Rover Evoque line has won more than its fair share of hearts. The DC100 concept which will lead to an all-new Defender in the years to come is also something that the company has in their kitty. In response to market trends pointing to the success of compact crossovers, which are essentially off-road ready city cars, it seems that Land Rover has one more card to play.

The company is considering the introduction of an entry-level, premium compact SUV. The platform for this new project will be shared with Tata Motors and their Chinese partner Chery. The new car will draw inspiration from the DC100 concept and new Defender. It is expected to be under 4 metres in length and offer both 4×2 and 4×4 drive modes. It is a given that India will be a priority market for this new car and we wouldn’t be surprised to see some even smaller engines powering this new model. A 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.5-litre diesel would be required considering the norms in force at the moment. We could stick our neck out and say that both engines will be turbocharged and will be offered in different states of tune depending on the turbocharger configuration.

If the new lightweight construction of the new Range Rover is anything to go by, we can expect an incredibly focused performer from the iconic SUV marque.
