Ford_Ecoboost_webFord has revealed yet another addition to their EcoBoost engine line-up: a 1.5-litre, four-cylinder unit.

This engine is the fifth in the EcoBoost family and has been produced keeping in mind markets like China, which offer substantial tax relief for engines of 1.5-litre capacity or less. The engine will be officially unveiled at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show.

Like the rest of the range, this engine combines turbocharging, direct injection and variable valve timing technology. It also incorporates some of the features from the 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, including the integrated exhaust manifold. It will deliver power and torque similar to the 1.6-litre EcoBoost unit available in the US and European markets, while being comparable to much larger naturally-aspirated engines. The 1.5-litre EcoBoost engine develops 177 PS and 240 Nm of torque; figures almost similar to the 1.6, but accompanied by more efficiency with lower fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Ford’s EcoBoost line-up now includes the 2012 ‘International Engine of the Year” award-winning 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, which will soon be on Indian roads inside the Ecosport compact SUV. It also includes the 1.6-litre and 2.0-litre four-cylinder versions, and a 3.5L V6, which replaces their V8 engine in many of their North American models. Ford has sold more than 600,000 EcoBoost-equipped models globally since the launch of the engine range in 2009.
