Robotic_car_555Coimbatore-based Bannari Amman Institute of Technology’s team Hot Wheels won the 2013 Freescale Cup, an ‘intelligent car’ race for engineering students.

The event was organised by Freescale Semiconductor in association with the Department of Electronic Systems Engineering (DESE) and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), and is part of Freescale’s initiative to promote innovation and creative thinking in engineering students across the world.

The 3rd edition of the Freescale Cup drew 225 teams from 70 colleges, of which 50 teams faced off in the grand finale. Freescale provided model car kits, development tools based on Freescale microcontroller technology, and technical support for the students, who had to develop a prototype racing car that followed a line along a track. The winning car was the one that completed the track in the shortest time.

Prizes included Rs 200,000 for the winning team plus sponsorship to the global event (scheduled in China later this year), Rs 100,000 for the first runner-up (Pi Tech from Nirma University, Ahmedabad), and Rs 50,000 for the second runner-up (Robo-Psyches, Delhi Technological University). There was also a Rs 25,000 consolation prize for three additional runner-up teams.
