Tata-owned JLR and China’s Chery Automobile took an important step forward in their recently-approved 50-50% JV by laying the foundation stone for their first car plant in Changshu, China, near Shanghai.

The plant is expected to be ready by 2014. This is a significant milestone in their 10.9 billion yuan investment plan that also includes a R&D center and engine production facility for off-road vehicles and limousines from the portfolios of Jaguar and Land Rover.

The new JV company will be named Chery Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Company Ltd. As part of the project, the companies will also create a separate brand for assembling models designed specifically for China, other than producing already-established vehicles.
