Volkswagen India’s much-awaited compact sedan finally enters production
Volkswagen India recently rolled out the Ameo, their first sub-four meter compact sedan, from its Chakan plant in the presence of Maharashtra’s Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis. Volkswagen India unveiled the Ameo at the Auto Expo, which was held in Delhi earlier this year. The Ameo is essentially a Polo with a boot, however, aesthetically, it looks like a proper sedan, unlike some of its competition. Anyway, the Ameo comes with two engine options namely the 1.2-litre MPI petrol engine and the trusted 1.5-litre TDI unit which serves the Polo hatchback as well. Another good thing about the Ameo is that it will have twin airbags and ABS as standard equipment across all variants. The Ameo will also have segment first features like the rain-sensing wipers, cruise control and cornering lights.

Ameo is a car that was specifically designed and developed for the Indian market and it will allow VW India to tap into the highly lucrative and growing compact sedan segment.

VW have invested a whopping Rs 720 crore in the development of the Ameo and they hope that it will be the next big thing from the German automotive giant.

On the occasion of the roll-out, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis said “Volkswagen India adds yet another feather in its hat as the all new made-for-India and made-in-India Ameo is rolled out today. It is not only a matter of pride for Volkswagen but for all of Maharashtra and I would like to share my heartiest congratulations with the company. This roll-out means a lot to us as it explains to the world what ‘Make in India’ actually means.” He further added, “Be it in the area of skill development among the youth, employment generation and Jalyukt Shivar Abhiyan to make Maharashtra drought-free by 2019, Volkswagen is playing an active role in all aspects and I am thankful for this.

Dr Andreas Lauermann, president and MD Volkswagen India Private limited commented, “This day marks an important event in the journey of Volkswagen in India. The Ameo symbolizes yet another first as it has specifically been created for the Indian customers.” He continued, “Due to the expected high demand for the Ameo, we have recently added a third shift to support the extra production volumes at our plant. We are committed to ensuring that our customers get their Ameo as soon as possible.

All Volkswagen dealers, across the country, are now taking bookings for the Ameo. The car will be launched in the next few months.
