Tata GenX Nano Launch (7) (800x600) Tata Motors have launched a new version of the Nano – christened GenX Nano. We bring you the details from the launch

At Rs 2,89,000, ex-showroom, Delhi the most expensive trim level of the GenX Nano launched by Tata Motors today is nearly thrice as expensive as the price of the original Nano launched in 2009. Yet, the Nano continues to be India’s most affordable car. And this time with the promise of ‘more bang per buck’ than the first time around.

After over half a decade of launching the first Nano, Tata Motors today launched a new version of the Nano, starting at Rs 1,99,000, ex-showroom in Delhi. Three trim levels of the Nano will be available – the base XE carries the aforementioned sub-Rs 2 lakh price tag, the mid-level XM trim sports a a sticker of Rs 2,29,000 and the range-topping XT is available for Rs 2,49,000. All prices ex-showroom in Delhi. However, this time around the Nano is also available with the convenience of an automated manual transmission (AMT), christened as Easy Shift. Two trim levels of the AMT version are available with the base Easy Shift XMA available for Rs 2,69,000 and the absolute top-of-the-line Easy Shift XMT going for Rs 2,89,000. Prices, ex-showroom, Delhi again.

In case you’re wondering what would justify the new prices, well, the new Nano has a lot more kit than the old Nano could ever hope to provide. For starters, there’s the aforementioned option of an automated transmission, which, at less than Rs 3 lakh, would be the most affordable automatic variant you could buy in the country. That addition however isn’t the sole change to the compact car. One of the most significant changes to the Nano comes in the form of an openable rear hatch (the lack of which was a point of great criticism among consumers and critics alike) – 110L for the version equipped with the four-speed manual gearbox and 94L for the AMT version. There is also a instrumentation cluster that is far more comprehensive than before in the amount of information it provides. Further down the centre console the GenX Nano also gets an infotainment system with Bluetooth connectivity. Additions also include front power windows. There are some less visible changes to the new Nano as well. Among them is the increase in the fuel tank capacity, which can now hold 24 litres of petrol, thus increasing the car’s range significantly. The monocoque too has been strengthened and the Nano now has stronger A-pillars and intrusion beams on the doors.

The Nano’s propulsion continues to come from the 624 cc in-line twin-cylinder engine with fuel injection, albeit with a drive-by-wire throttle in the new car. The peak output is rated at 38 Ps and 51 Nm.
