Renault-Nissan CEO and Chairman Carlos Ghosn confirmed yesterday that the Renault-Nissan Alliance is developing all-new vehicles to meet the specific requirements of car buyers in growing economies.
This announcement confirms that the CMF-A programme, the first grounds-up programme by the alliance and covering the most affordable cars in the Common Module Family, is underway.
The CMF programme is Renault-Nissan’s unique, modular system of vehicle architecture defining a vehicle as comprising five modules: engine bay, cockpit, front underbody, rear underbody and electrical/electronic architecture. Compatible parts from the modules can be assembled into different configurations to maximise brand differentiation and efficiency.
The first vehicles from the CMF-A programme will roll out from the Renault-Nissan plant in Chennai in 2015, with more details (e.g. pricing, volume) to be announced closer to that date. The CMF-A category will permit a lot of flexibility with variations in powertrain and body style in accordance with customer preferences and requirements in India and other fast-growing markets.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Ghosn said that the CMF-A programme hoped to satisfy customers from fast-growing economies who did not want stripped-down cars from mature markets, but a car that did not compromise on style or robustness and was modern, as well as with breakthrough pricing.
