To mark the occasion the company had invited the living legend of cricket – Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar, to fit an India-assembled engine into a BMW 5-Series. The engine in question consisted of 2,800 components of which 1,400 have been made by Indian component makers.

“The experience of making a BMW with my own hands was unique and unforgettable. I am impressed with the high quality standards followed at the BMW plant in Chennai that ensure the impeccable performance of a BMW,” said Tendulkar, himself a self-confessed BMW enthusiast.

On the occasion, BMW Group India President, Philipp Von Sahr, said, “The BMW Group has looked towards India with a long term perspective and our strategy is based on an inclusive approach. We have continued to build our operations in India in a systematic way. With a strong portfolio of locally produced cars, the time was appropriate to partner with major Indian auto component suppliers. This decision benefits BMW in terms of cost optimisation and value addition.”

Upto eight different models can be locally produced on the two assembly lines at the plant, which has been in operation since March 2007.
