With May comes the new model year, and for 2016, Volvo have introduced the new 1.5-litre four-cylinder Drive-E petrol motor, in T2 and T3 guises, in Europe and the UK.

The new motor features direct petrol injection and turbocharging, displacing 1,498cc. This was achieved by maintaining the 82-mm bore, but reducing the stroke from 93.2 mm (from the 2.0-litre unit) to 70.9 mm. In T2 guise, it produces 122 PS at 5,000 RPM and 220 Nm between 1,600 and 3,500 RPM. In T3 guise, it makes 152 PS at 5,000 RPM and a heftier 250 Nm between 1,700 and 4,000 RPM.

The new 2.0-litre Drive-E D2 turbo-diesel also replaces the aging 1.6-litre motor. The 120 PS and 280 Nm output marginally exceeds the old unit’s 115 PS and 270 Nm, but the claimed 3.2 litres/100 km (31.25 km/l) is higher, thanks to the efficient i-ART injection system.

The D3 diesel is now a 2.0-litre four-cylinder Drive-E unit with the same 150 PS and 350 Nm output, but with peak power coming in at 3,750 RPM and peak torque between 1,750 and 3,000 RPM.

The new T2 is offered in the V40 five-door hatchback, while the T3 and D2 are offered with the V40, V40 Cross Country, V60, V70 and S60. The S80 luxury saloon, meanwhile, is now being offered in just two variants – T5 and D4 – for the 2016 model year, signalling that its replacement is coming soon.

We hope to see the new engines in India later this year.
