Japanese diesel focused utility vehicle manufacturers Isuzu have been selling their flagship MU-7 premium SUV, and pick-up truck – D-Max in India since August 2012. Initially, the company imported fully built vehicles into India for sale, and then tied up with Hindustan Motors who started assembling their units for Isuzu.
Now, the company has ramped up its presence in India by acquiring land to the tune of 107 acres with the purpose of building a manufacturing plant of their very own in the country. The plant will be built at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh and will see an initial production capacity of 50,000 untits, with room for expansion up to 1,20,000 units. Isuzu intend on investing Rs.3000 Crore in this project, and hope to see their first indigenously produced vehicles in India roll out by 2016.
At the event, Takashi Kikuchi, President & Managing Director, Isuzu Motors India expressed his optimism about Isuzu India’s big step – he said, “It is an important and exciting day for us since we have broken ground at SriCity. India is a key region in Isuzu’s global growth strategy for its emerging markets and as an important manufacturing hub in the future. Our focus is to accelerate our business and establish Isuzu as an important player in the pick-up trucks and utility vehicles market in India.”
