GLS

If model and variant strategy analysis proves correct, Mercedes are set to introduce a Maybach GLS-Class, and soon.

The demand for SUVs is higher than ever before and every company globally wants to swoop in and grab a piece of that hefty pie. Mercedes-Benz only recently launched the GLS-Class: a renamed GL-Class with a bit more S-Class luxury added to the mix. We just recently covered the class of super-luxury SUVs.

However, the company will not stop there. Given the choice of drivelines on offer: 350 d, 400, 550 and AMG 63 variants in the US, with the UK getting the 350 d and AMG GLS 63 to start off. The two trims – designo and AMG Line – mark the luxury and sport alternatives. However, the pricing, from £69,100 (Rs 69 lakh) for the GLS 350 d, going up to £102,330 (Rs 1.02 crore) for the AMG GLS 63 point to the fact that Mercedes still have an opening for an even higher, more premium version.

The marque will need a more exclusive model to take the fight to the upcoming Bentley Bentayga (which starts at roughly £160,000 in the UK, or Rs 1.6 crore) and the evergreen Range Rover, which in long wheelbase avatar, has it going for it from the outset. The S-Class may have a V12, but the GLS-Class doesn’t. With the 63 still tuned to deliver 760 Nm, as opposed to the 900 Nm the same engine delivers in the S 63 saloon and Coupé, there is doubt of an AMG 65 going under the bonnet, but not sufficient evidence to dismiss it completely, considering the AMG G 65 is in showrooms; we know the M279 can deal with a transfer box.

Thus, with the company stating that the Maybach sub-brand will expand to other models, the GLS is now the prime candidate. We also believe that, like the S-Class and Range Rover, there will be a 2+2 seater option, as well as a seven-seater. Whether there will be a long-wheelbase version remains to be seen, but a Mercedes-Maybach GLS 600 is surely set for a reveal soon; complete with the 6.0-litre biturbo V12 with 530 PS and 830 Nm. This will sit at the very top of the super-luxury SUV mountain for the marque. Expect pricing to be in line with the Maybach S-Class, starting from around Rs 2.5 crore (ex-showroom, India), maybe even less if they do a Maybach GLS 500, as they have with the S-Class.

If you’re in the market for a super-luxurious and super-capable all-roader, you might want to hold on for just a little longer.
