For those who believed that the GT2 is gone for good, fret not, it’ll be back!

Porsche have revealed plans to introduce a new 911 GT2 in the next few years. For those who (this writer included) were saddened that the all-powerful GT2 and its more mental RS counterpart were long gone, Porsche have given us hope, stating that the new GT2 should arrive by 2018. Although there isn’t a GT2 race series anymore, there shouldn’t be a reason to not have more power now, should there?

As a refresher, the old GT2 used twin variable geometry turbos on the 3.6-litre flat-six to deliver 530 PS. The RS raised the mental quotient by delivering 620 PS and 700 Nm of torque. Those numbers may seem almost ordinary in today’s day and age, but remember, this was the Type 997 in 2010, and this was without four-wheel drive, or an automatic ‘box. One slip of the foot at the wrong time could spell complete disaster. Oh, and 0-100 was dismissed in 3.3 seconds, 250 km/h in 15 seconds, and it would top out at 330 km/h.

The Nürburgring lap record for the 911 GT2 RS was 7’18 back then. How much more will the new one push the envelope? We can’t wait to find out.
