Ford are set to re-enter the pinnacle endurance racing in 2016, contesting a new GT at the 24 hours of Le Mans.
It has been understood that the company is in discussion with racing teams to get operations going. The new GT, or GT car, is expected to be unveiled at the upcoming North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Rather than boast naturally-aspirated V8 power, don’t be surprised to see a mighty, tuned up version of the EcoBoost V6 under the hood, with regulation changes also supposedly in the pipeline for 2016. At present, the GTE category does not permit the use of turbocharged engines.
Ford had picked up the gauntlet thrown down by Ferrari, who had won six races from 1960 to 1965, and ended up winning in 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969 with the GT40.
