The Suzuki Jimny five-door is one of the most-anticipated models from Maruti Suzuki.
While the original three-door version is now being manufactured in India for export markets, there has been no news of the larger car. Until now.
A Japanese motoring website confirmed with Suzuki representatives that the Suzuki Jimny five-door is indeed on the cards and simply a victim of the global pandemic at this point. The car was originally suppposed to be unveiled globally later this year at the Tokyo Motor Show but the event has been cancelled and postponed to next year due to the current circumstances.
What can we expect under the bonnet? It is most likely to come galloping in with a turbocharged engine and mild-hybrid system. To be specific, we may expect it to draw power from the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine, with 105 hp and 138 Nm, that does duty in the Ciaz, Ertiga, Vitara Brezza and S-Cross. To help the Jimny stick to its off-road credentials, it is possible that the output will be tweaked. Transmission options may also include manual and automatic variants, as well as two- or four-wheel drive.
India is one of the most promising markets for the Suzuki Jimny five-door and it has garnered a significant amount of interest since the three-door variant was showcased at the latest Auto Expo. Besides, the fact that India is already producing the Jimny for export further increases the chances for an India launch. However, we can expect that eventuality only a few months after the global unveil. Fingers crossed.
