The Bavarian manufacturer has launched the new 5 Series in India.
This is a vital car launch for BMW in India. During the launch Vikram Pawah, the new President of BMW India Group, said that the 5 Series accounts to 30 per cent of their sales in India till date. BMW has already sold 3,533 units across models this year.
The new Five has borrowed a large number of styling cues and some technology from the 7 Series. The cars are priced from Rs 49.90 lakh for the 530i Sport Line to Rs 61.30 lakh for the 530d M Sport.
The Indian clientele’s choice of engines will be limited to three (two diesel and one petrol). All three engines will be equipped with BMW’s TwinPower Turbo technology. The 2.0-litre, four-cylinder 520d will produce 190 PS and a peak torque of 400 Nm while the larger 3.0-litre, in-line six in the 530d will produce 265 PS and a peak torque of 620 Nm. Petrol engine afficianados will have to be content with the 530i for now. The 2.0-litre, in-line four engine will produce 252 PS and a peak torque of 350 Nm.
The BMW EfficientLightweight design concept has focused on increased use of aluminium and high-strength steel. This has brought down the weight of the new car by a cool 70 kilograms over the outgoing model. The new car is also slightly larger than the car it replaces. It is 36 mm longer, six mm wider and two mm taller. The wheelbase has also been increased by seven mm.
The LED headlights are now offered as standard. ‘Adaptive LED Headlights’ can be availed as an option with ‘BMW Selective Beam’ (an anti-dazzle high beam with a range of up to 500 metres). On the inside, the luxurious cabin gets a 70 percent larger heads up display and two color displays for rear seat passengers.
BMW claim that they have significantly reduced the drag co-efficient of the new 5 Series by 10 per cent over its predecessor. This is partly owed to the active air flap control for the radiator that is now available across all the models in the 5 Series. This system admits air through the kidney grille and lower air intakes when more cooling required.
The new 5 Series will also showcase a variety of technology borrowed from its bigger sibling, such as wireless charging for smartphones and the BMW smart key. It also gets gesture control with six pre-defined hand movement functions.
For the owner’s peace of mind, the new 5 Series is available with BSI and BSI+ service programs, offering 3 years / 40,000 km to 10 years or 2 lakh km warranty. Apart from this it also included is BMW Repair program.
