Mini_Cooper_2014_webMINI are preparing to unveil the all-new Cooper models and with BMW readying their turbocharged three-pots, it was only a matter of time before the announcement came through.

MINI will launch their latest Cooper and Cooper S models with completely new engines, one of which is down one cylinder, but both are definitely up on power when compared to their predecessors. The TwinPower Turbo engines which have been announced are a 1.5-litre triple and a 2.0-litre four. With the turbocharger boosting output, the triple will make 136 PS and 220 Nm of torque, the latter of which comes in at just 1,250 rpm, with an overboost of 230 Nm on tap. That means +14 PS and +60 Nm than the 1.6-litre naturally aspirated four in the current MINI. The Cooper S, meanwhile, gets a reasonable boost as well. A new 2.0-litre turbo-four brings 192 PS and 280 Nm of torque, which also has an overboost on tap – 300 Nm. That’s a lot of twist in the tale, although the overall jump over the current model is just 8 PS and 40 Nm. But then you have to consider that the priority is to have lower emissions and fuel consumption while offering equal or better power output. Good job, then. What’s more, there is expected to be an even hotter version to be plonked into the John Cooper Works model, which will arrive later in 2014.

The new MINI will also bring in new technology for lightweight construction, safety, entertainment and dynamics. BMW’s developments over the last few years will see inclusion in every aspect of the car. The new MINI will be able to optimise gear shifts, with the engine sensor taking care of engine speeds to ensure the smoothest shifts. It will also be able to anticipate downshifts. There are more improvements to the steering, braking and suspension systems; including the use of speed-sensitive steering, torque-steer compensation and electrically adjustable dampers.

The new MINI Cooper will be introduced in India following its global launch at prices similar or even more competitive than those on the tags at the moment.
