The Mercedes-Benz brand is associated with the very top rung of automotive quality, and the company’s Indian presence has also lived up to this billing. The Indian leg of Mercedes-Benz have just launched the latest in its line of fine automobiles in India in the form of the SLK 55 AMG roadster.
As soon as you see that AMG badge, you know one thing for sure, this car is more than likely to be able to go really, really fast. This impression is only confirmed when you look at the vital statistics of the SLK 55’s potent power plant. The naturally aspirated 5.5-litre V8 (making the SLK 55 the only V8-engined roadster available on Indian shores till date) produces 421 PS at 6,800 RPM and 540 Nm of torque at 4,500 RPM. The SLK 55 goes from 0-100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds, and is capable of reaching its electronically limited 250 km/l top speed mark.
The SLK 55 also comes equipped with Mercedes signature AMG SpeedShift 7-speed double clutch transmission system. This system allows the driver to switch between 3 distinct modes of operation – Controlled efficiency, Sports mode, and Manual based on their needs.
Magic Sky Control is an intriguing fixture on the SLK 55, allowing the driver to customise the amount of light that penetrates through the glass roof (when up), on the fly. The car also features a command online 6 DVD Harmon Kardon surround sound system, ambient lighting inside the cabin, and 4-way adjustable lumbar support to enhance the driving experience.
Safety is taken care of through Attention Assist, which keeps a tab on drowsy drivers and makes sure you don’t fall asleep at the wheel, and ABS and ASR for those emergency braking situations. Another innovative safety feature is the active bonnet for pedestrian protection. The bonnet goes up during a collision to prevent pedestrian injury. The car has been launched at 1.26 Crore ex-showroom Delhi.
