The S Class has always been the pinnacle of luxury from the owners of the three-pointed star. Now Mercedes-Benz have launched the S400 for their Indian consumers. Details here…

Story: Team Car India

Mercedes-Benz India have launched the new S400 at Rs 1.26 crore (ex-showroom, Pune), as part of their plans to aggressively expand their Indian operations. With the addition of the new S400, the ninth S Class model to be launched by the German car manufacturer since 2014, the S Class portfolio now becomes the most comprehensive one. Mercedes-Benz also confirmed that the new S400 will be produced locally at the company’s plant in Chakan.

The S400 is powered by a 2,996 cc twin turbo V6 petrol engine that puts out 333 PS at 5,250-6,000 RPM and 480 Nm of peak torque at 1,600-4,000 RPM. Transmission to the rear wheels is via Mercedes’ 7G-TRONIC Plus gearbox.

Continuing with the S Class legacy of exemplary luxury equipment, the S400 gets the benefit of a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 24 high performance speakers and a system output of 1,520 watts. To ensure that the vehicle keeps up with your mood, the S400 gets seven-colour ambient light with five dimming levels, a hot stone massage function for the seat and a panoramic sunroof with rain sensors to help it close automatically should the heavens open up. The new S400 rides on Mercedes’ AIRMATIC suspension to ensure that S Class owners continue to enjoy the cosseting ride quality that the model is known for. The car also packs in a huge punch when it comes to safety, courtesy ESP, eight airbags, Merc’s PRE-Safe, Brake Assist, Adaptive Brakes with Hold function, ASR and Hill Start Assist.

“Mercedes-Benz believes in introducing the latest products and variants in the market at regular intervals, to keep customer interest and curiosity intact in the brand,” said Roland Folger, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India. He added, “With the launch of the S400, we further extend the S Class model range and also bolster our strong presence in the prestigious S Class segment.”

Meanwhile, the Mercedes-Benz India website no longer lists the V8 powered S500, lending credence to rumours of the S500 being withdrawn from the Indian market in the wake of the S400 launch.
