Lamborghini have confirmed a twin-turbo V8 for their upcoming sport-luxury SUV, the Urus, set for a 2017 introduction.
The Italian marque has announced that their third model line will indeed move away from a naturally-aspirated motor to twin-turbo V8 unit instead. The Urus is set to début as a 2018 model in late 2017, and we expected to see a 600-PS version of the 5.2-litre V10 under the bonnet. However, the news now is that Lamborghini will be the latest to adopt the 4.0-litre TFSI V8, similar to the ones seen in models from Audi and Bentley, although, Lamborghini boss, Stephan Winkelmann, confirmed that this particular engine would be exclusive to Lamborghini.
Switching to a twin-turbo V8 was seen as necessary for the torque delivery requirements, coupled to the fact that the Urus will have a centre of gravity unlike any other Lamborghini car today. The engine is believed to be a direct derivative of the 3,993-cc V8 used in VW Premier Autos. It presently produces between 435 PS in the A8 and 605 PS in the S8 plus, RS 6 Performance and RS 7 Performance models, while in Bentley’s line-up, the motor is used in the Continental GT V8 with 507 PS, going up to 580 PS in the Continental GT3-R. We can expect a higher output in the Urus, with around, or probably over 600 PS and 700 Nm, distributed to all four wheels. The peak existing numbers speak of 605 PS between 6,100-6,800 RPM with 700 Nm of torque available from 1,750-6,000 RPM, with an additional 50 Nm available in overboost mode.
With this bit of news, we wonder if the twin-turbo V8 TDI motor, the 4.2-litre with 385 PS and 850 Nm, also seen in the Audi A8, Q7 and Porsche Cayenne S Diesel, will make it the first diesel motor that Lamborghini offer.
