Mercedes-AMG have finally let loose the details for their new 4.0-litre V8!
The new BiTurbo V8 will find it’s place in several models, replacing either the 6.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 or the ’63’-badged 5.5-litre BiTurbo V8, including making its debut in the all-new AMG GT, the next super sportscar from the company (C190 series), as well as the next C63 AMG.
The all-new M178 90º V8 BiTurbo motor displaces 3,982cc from an 83mm bore and 92mm stroke and revs up to 7,200 RPM! Lightweight forged pistons fill up those wells while the cylinder heads use zirconium-alloy for maximum thermal conductivity. It runs a DOHC, four valves per cylinder layout and has dry-sump lubrication, as expected.
Peak power, in the state of tune announced, is 510 PS at 6,250 RPM with a peak torque of 650 Nm from 1,750 to 4,750 RPM – around the same power as the 6.3 motor and the same peak torque as that in the SLS! The engine weighs 209 kg dry and is Euro 6 compliant, thanks to its BlueDIRECT family genes. Last, but not least, AMG claim their distinctive sound is intact!
