Performance and fuel-efficiency
The Vento is powered by a 1.6-litre DOHC petrol, which is par for the course. It does have the highest torque rating, though, at 153 Nm. Its performance is brisk, but not necessarily any faster than any of its rivals here. In fact, it posts almost exactly the same times as the Ford Fiesta. However, the manner of its delivery is the talking point here. The Vento never feels as if it’s trying very hard, which is a good thing for everyday driving. The engine doesn’t like to be revved
too much, though, and sounds a little strained in the nether regions of its rev range. The Vento’s drivability is its talking point; it has a strong motor with a good spread of torque and a fair turn of speed if you spur it on.
The handling of the car complements the engine very well. Once again, the Vento has an assured and composed feel. The steering is communicative and the seat-of-the-pants feeling you get is of a car that won’t spring any surprises on you. It is a fool-proof and safe car to drive. It rides very well too and the rear seat passengers will appreciate the ride quality on longer drives. The ride and handling balance of the car is very well judged and shows the amount of fine-tuning Volkswagen’s engineers have spent on this aspect of the car. It’s this combination of attributes that make the Vento feel like a car from a class above where it is priced.
The Vento returns surprisingly good fuel-efficiency too, which, at 14.1 km to a litre of petrol overall, is the same as the Fiesta once again.

Value
The Vento Trendline costs Rs 8.32 lakh (OTR, Pune), which is a fair price, but you do feel the lack of features. In this trim it lacks essentials such as ABS and airbags, a stereo, fog lamps, climate control, height-adjustable driver’s seat and even the much talked about adjustment lever to move the front passenger seat from the rear cabin, which is available only in the Highline

CAPTIONS:
1. Trendline model has simplified trip computer
2. Functional dash is well built but lacks flair
3. Engine has good drivability
4. Bodywork from C-pillar onwards is all new, but the styling gels well
5. Ample legroom and headroom make the rear a great place to be
The Hyundai Verna
Design and Style
Are these the same guys who styled the i20, i30 and iX35? If yes, it begets the question – what were they thinking? The aforementioned models are fine examples of well-designed automobiles, full of interesting details. What weird influences inspired the Verna, one cannot comment upon, but now we have the Transform, which, if anything, is worse. The new grille may have been intended to give the front end more dynamism, but, instead, it ends up looking like a badly executed after-market add-on. The tail-lamp lenses have been restyled too, but, once again, the original was slightly better.
