Jeep will soon add a new baby to the line-up – the all-new Renegade – providing prospective Jeep buyers an even more affordable option.
The new car debuted at the 2014 Geneva International Motor Show and instantly set flashbulbs alight. What was speculated to be a beefier FIAT 500 L in renderings, turned out to be quite a creation. Reminiscent of the Jeep Compass, the new Renegade will be positioned below the Cherokee, which was introduced only last year.
The engine choices are, in the US at least, a 1.4-litre turbo-four with 168 PS and 250 Nm of torque, as well as a TigerShark-derived 2.4-litre naturally-aspirated four with 184 PS and 240 Nm of torque. We expect to see a large MultiJet diesel under the bonnet for Europe and, eventually, India. Customers will also be treated to another unique choice: Active Drive or Active Drive Low. The former is a standard 4×4 system while the latter is a low-ratio version with a 20:1 crawl mode, made for tackling more challenging terrain.
With the Renegade, the company finally tries to make room for itself in the compact SUV segment. Once they do arrive in India, something long overdue already, they will have the likes of the Renault Duster and the Mahindra XUV500 in their crosshairs with this one.
