New MG Hector

We switched over to the diesel variant for the journey from Kodanadu to Coimbatore. This is the familiar 2.0-litre MultiJet II turbo-diesel from the Jeep Compass – complete with its 170 PS and 350 Nm. The drive, though, is front-wheel only, so select your terrain with due consideration.

The turbo-diesel engine has massive torque and the build-up is strong. The ratios, however, required frequent shifting in the hills else the whirr from the motor doing around 3,000 revs is something not really kind to the senses. The sound deadening, then, could be better as well. That apart, the heavier diesel engine makes the Hector seem even more planted. The steering feels a tad heavier but the drive feel doesn’t change. I did experience some clutch pedal issues with the engaging and disengaging not being as smooth as I would have liked it to be. The clunking noises accompanying the action in some cases were also an undeniable part of the experience. There were also a fair few warning signs on the dash, something I hope MG will iron out as time progresses.

Overall, the MG Hector seems to be a promising prospect in the segment and brings in many things that many buyers will look forward to, some for daily use and others for bragging rights. However, I reiterate, MG aren’t sliding in casually. They’re gunning for the pie and have more dealers and after-sales facilities being readied with fervour. Things are looking good and, going by the interest shown by passers-by and onlookers, the Hector could do really well for itself.
