If you were to translate into English the Latin phrase that you see in the headline, you’ll realise it says, “Mobility for the masses”. When we first drove the Mobilio in Nashik last year, we had thought that this urban utility vehicle (I can’t think of describing this MUV in any other way) was, in more ways than one, the perfect MUV to have in India. On paper at least, it had pretty much everything there was that one could ask for — a frugal yet decently powerful diesel engine, sorted ride and handling qualities, three rows of seats and even a decent enough boot with all three rows up. What more could one ask for?
So, when Honda Cars India were kind enough to send us one for a proper long-term test, we thought the best way to introduce this vehicle into the Car India fleet would be with a 1,000-plus kilometre drive. The destination was not anything exotic, just to Goa from Pune and back, but the mix of roads — four-lane highways, poorly surfaced diversions, twisty ghat sections and then the narrow roads of the coastal State — offered a good opportunity to test the vehicle’s mettle. The fact that there would be six people on board with luggage also added to the challenges that the Mobilio would face. I am happy to say that the Honda Mobilio emerged from its maiden long-term test run with flying colours.
