MARUTI SUZUKI, THE COUNTRY’S LARGEST CAR makers, have cut production this month of the high-volume Alto, WagonR, Estilo and Ritz hatchbacks owing to poor demand.
Maruti offi cials say they are adjusting their production with market conditions. There are some models that are not moving fast enough given the sluggish demand, forcing the company to adopt such drastic measures.
MSL are the fi rst car company to formally announce an output cut. They had produced 17,000 fewer cars last month after rationalising production between their Gurgaon and Manesar plants. They sold 75,300 vehicles in July, compared to 1,00,857 units a year earlier. Maruti expect to post single-digit sales growth this fi scal year.
In an attempt to keep abreast of a changing market, MSL are focusing all their attention on expanding the capacity of theirpopular models and concentrating on large-scale research and development. This is being done to keep up their leadership status among auto manufacturers like Ford, GM, Toyota, Hyundai, VW Group and Tata Motors.
