Land Rover is set to turn the Discovery into a model line from just one model, company officials revealed at the ongoing Geneva Motor Show.
The Range Rover, initially, was one model, but now there are four, and the company has seen huge success come as a result. The Evoque, Sport and Long models join the Range Rover in its line, and have, together, brought in the numbers for the once troubled company, now thriving under the ownership of Tata Motors.
Following in the footsteps of big brother, the Discovery will soon have more models come 2015. The move to aluminium construction will see a considerable weight-loss and newer, more efficient engines as well as hybrid drivelines stepping in to power the new creation.
It would be fair to assume that a standard model will be available in the usual trims – SE and HSE – which will go up against cars like the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz M-Class. The possible long-wheelbase model with seven seats would take on the Audi Q7 and Mercedes-Benz GL-Class. The Discovery has always been a more leisurely and outdoorsy model than the more luxury-focused Range Rover, and in its new guise, will continue to be just that: effective and capable.
