Registers lesser sales in March than competitors
Launched in 1998, the City has evolved through three generations in India and has held the crown of the best selling mid-size sedan through these years, until now.
Honda is facing increasing competition and technical crises in India. The launch of the VW Vento is the one that gave it a major setback. The Vento has a bigger engine compared to the City’s and comes in both petrol and diesel variants. Price wise too, the Vento petrol range starts Rs 1.38 lakh lower than the City (ex-showroom Pune). This has resulted in the Vento selling more units than the City in March. Maruti Suzuki’s SX4 also sold more units than the City in the same month aided by the diesel variant of the car. The situation will get tougher once the new Hyundai Verna is launched. The difference in sales figures is still marginal though and belongs to a short period. The City has stood the test of time and Honda will surely take steps to regain its lead in the segment.
