BMW are the latest to join the plug-in hybrid SUV bandwagon with the all-new X5 xDrive 40e.

The X5 40e retains all the core values of the first X5, which kick-started their Sports Activity Vehicle line, taking them to a new high in the US. With the X5 40e, BMW now have a larger hybrid electric option after the ground-breaking i8 hybrid sports car.

Power comes from a four-cylinder TwinPower Turbo motor paired with a synchronous electric motor. A lithium-ion battery pack powers the e-motor, which delivers a peak 250 Nm. The combined system output stands at 313 PS; good enough to complete the 0-100 km/h dash in just 6.8 seconds. MAX eDrive mode allows a maximum range of 31 km on pure electric power with zero tailpipe emissions. For the petrol engine, an 8-speed Steptronic automatic takes care of transmission duties.

Practicality is retained in the X5 40e with the boot still offering between 500 and 1,720 litres, depending on how you fold down which seats. Moreover, the most important highlight is the fuel consumption, which stands at 3.3 litres per 100 km (30 km/l) on the combined cycle with CO2 emissions as low as 77 g/km.

The BMW X5 xDrive 40e will take on the new Audi Q7 e-tron as well as the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine.
