Audi have introduced their low-cost variant of the Q3, dubbed the S Edition.
The new model is basically an all-new creation featuring a familiar engine in a different state of tune, front wheel drive and a manual transmission, Of course, it’s only the hardware which stays on the shelf. On the inside, the goodies are all there.
What Audi have done, is taken a best-seller and taken out all the bits which would not add any more to the luxury you see and touch when you’re inside. The leather seats, climate control, entertainment and communications, all creature comforts and safety features including the stability program and six airbags are all a part of the package. The only departing feature which many will miss: the signature LED daytime running lights. You also get 16-inch alloy wheels. Under the skin, the 2.0-litre TDI diesel motor makes 140 PS and 320 Nm of torque and is paired to a 6-speed manual transmission driving only the front wheels. No complicated twin-clutch auto ‘box or quattro all-wheel-drive here. Not only has this driven down costs, but also, more importantly, weight. The new Q3 S tips the scales at 1,445 kg. Coupled to the more efficient drivetrain, this will also mean higher fuel economy figures, for those who want to stretch that litre of diesel further.
Audi has priced the Q3 S at Rs 24.99 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). At this price, the compact SUV gains ground over premium hatchbacks and makes it even more competitive against the BMW X1, the Mercedes-Benz B-Class and the Volvo V40 Cross Country. Looks like Audi have got this one just about perfect as well!
