Volvo S90 teaser

The next in line, for Volvo Car Corporation, internationally, is the all-new S90 luxury sedan. The polar bear is out of the bag now, and the company is set to introduce the S90 for the new model year, with final testing being completed as we speak. Essentially, it’s the sedan version of the all-new XC90, for those who want saloon proportions and a shapely booty. It will replace the S80 after over 17 years. The S80 incidentally replaced the S90 back in 1998. The S90, which replaced the 960 in 1996, was also the last rear-wheel-drive from Volvo. The new car, however, will have front-wheel, or all-wheel drive options. The drivelines will be similar to those of the XC90, so we can expect a 225 PS D5, as well as a 408 PS-combined T8 Twin Engine model. The company showcased their technological prowess at Microsoft’s headquarters in Redmond, while also announcing their partnership and teasing the S90.

Speaking of replacements, the V70 is also set to see the sunset. The V90 will be the more luxurious version which will essentially be an S90 estate, drawing cues from the Concept Estate shown early last year. Expect familiar drivelines there too, as well as, we expect, a V90 XC, to – what else – sit between the V90 and XC90.

Volvo did mention that the all-new XC90 would be the oldest new car very soon and they mean it. The all-new XC60 is close to being revealed, so Geneva next year should really be something. Expect more styling cues akin to the Concept XC Coupé. Speaking of which, the all-new Compact Modular Architecture (CMA) will result in more than one exciting new development.

The all-new XC40, the first on the CMA platform, will be the compact crossover to rival the Audi Q3, BMW X1 as well as the Mercedes GLA-Class. It may just feature the new three-cylinder Drive-E motors and newly rated four-pot petrol and diesel motors as well as hybrid drivelines. Being modular, expect longer, more capable versions, with a compact seven-seat offering also a possibility, albeit a remote one as of now. Furthermore, there will be more varied choices too. The S40 sedan will arrive, positioned below the S60, to battle with the likes of the Audi A3 and Mercedes CLA-Class, if not also give potential buyers of the Corolla, Jetta, Octavia and Cruze something else to seriously consider.
