Susie Wolff has impressed behind the wheel and is heading to a new high.
Here’s a look at the young woman who has achieved so much in so little time; setting an example for many in the process.
The FIA Women in Motorsport Ambassador has been on a roll of late. In 2012, she was appointed as the ‘development driver’ for the Williams F1 team, working with the FW34 in October of last year. Her performance in the car stirred up quite a bit of interest, so much so that she was given a more thorough role for 2013; spending more time in the simulator and getting a real taste of the Williams Formula 1 car. The Scot was the first in line to drive the team’s 2013 car, the FW35, and is responsible for all aerodynamic testing in 2013. She has also been given the opportunity to participate in the Young Driver Test despite her age, on account of not having raced in a competitive Formula 1 environment.
Speaking to BBC Sport, Wolff says, “I get a lot of support in the team and it’s fantastic that Claire (Williams) has been made deputy team principal. All of us are enthusiastic about the future.” The wife of Mercedes’ Director of Motorsport, and Williams F1 shareholder Toto Wolff, Susie Wolff has said she doesn’t want to jump steps along the way, and that the next thing on her list is of course a superlicence. Wolff has completed enough mileage with Williams in tests to apply for her superlicence, but doesn’t see the point as there are no vacant race seats available. While 2014 may present an opportunity, it still remains to be seen which way the teams go about their business, with the switch to new 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engines also set to take place next season.
