Volkswagen set out with ambitious plans back in 2011 and they have put their money where their mouth is. In line with their global initiative, ‘Think Blue. Factory’ the VW plant in Pune has accomplished the first of many targets they had set out to achieve by 2018. The company has now successfully cut down their specific waste generation by 30.5% and CO2 emissions by 21.2%. The company has also reduced their energy consumption by 20.6 %.

Commenting on the achievement, Andreas Lauenroth, Executive Director- Technical and Plant Head, Volkswagen India said, “All the employees at Volkswagen Pune Plant have undertaken ‘Think Blue. Factory.’ programme as a part of their everyday working and lifestyle. With innovative and effective ideas from our teams taking concrete shapes, we have been able to achieve some of our goals well before the set timeline of 2018.”

The company is actively trying to reduce its footprint on the environment by 25% per car globally and this is being carried out with efforts in the five key areas- Energy consumption, CO2 emissions, Water consumption, Waste generation and VOC emissions. With pollution levels skyrocketing, the automotive industry needs more efforts in this direction for a greener future.
