Toyota have revealed their compact challenger in the turbo-petrol segment – the new 8NR-FTS – a 1.2-litre, direct-injection, turbocharged petrol in the new Auris.
Based on the 1.0-litre three-pot seen in the Aygo and Yaris, the new compact four-cylinder petrol engine uses direct-injection and turbocharging to deliver big car performance in a lightweight and efficient package. It also features VVT-iW, or Variable Valve Timing intelligent Wide: allowing more efficient performance over a wider rev band. Furthermore, the motor makes use of advanced technologies that allows it to switch from the Otto to the Atkinson cycle under low load, vertical vortex high tumble air-flow intake ports, an exhaust manifold integrated in the cylinder head, and advanced heat management measures: the turbine and heat-exchangers are water-cooled for good measure.
The 1,197cc four-pot makes 116 PS and 185 Nm of torque: more than some older 2.0-litre motors, not to mention the current 1.2 and 1.5 seen in the Etios and Etios Liva. As is with efficient turbo-motors these days, the torque plateau begins at 1,500 RPM and continues until 4,000 RPM. We hope to seen optimally tuned versions of this engine in India too.
