Ford sent shockwaves around the car world when they announced that they want to get back to endurance racing. And now, with the new GT, they’ve shocked the world!
It was barely enough time for people to catch their breath when Ford hinted at a new GT, and before we know it, here it is! The all-new Ford GT debuts as a 2016 model, exactly 50 years since the GT40 began its legendary Le Mans domination. As is with the times, it will feature a completely new design, construction and powertrain.
What we know for now is that Ford have used mostly carbon-fibre and aluminium in the construction, making the new GT as light and agile as possible. It will be a two-seater, and the engine, located in the middle, is a heavily worked-upon 3.5-litre V6 EcoBoost unit from the F-150, but with two turbochargers, direct injection and over 600 PS! The 7-speed twin-clutch automatic transmission will drive only the rear wheels, which, by the way, are 20” in diameter and will be wrapped in Michelin’s finest Super Sport Cup 2 rubber. A downforce-dishing rear spoiler will also be part of the low, wide package – yes, very low and very wide – as will be a pair of scissor doors.
They say the power-to-weight ratio is going to be stunning. So, sadly, will be the price tag: an estimated $200,000 (Rs 1.2 crore) before any taxes or duties. Doesn’t matter! Ford’s mid-engined race-ready roadcar is here, and we’re excited!
