So what do you get when you take a sexy-looking sportback saloon car with four rings on the grille, equip it with quattro all-wheel drive and plonk a 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine under the bonnet? What you have here, sir, is the new Audi S5 Sportback

Just the other day my editor and I were having a nice chat about how good cars are always the result of the best compromise. And, before you get all hot under the collar, there’s a lot of truth in that statement. It isn’t always the most powerful car with the biggest engine that emerges as the most fantastic car in the world. Nor is it the car with the stiffest suspension (which traditional wisdom dictates should result in the best handling) that ends up being the most enjoyable. Or, conversely, the car with the softest suspension (and, therefore, what should be the best ride quality to most people’s imaginations) doesn’t always end up being the most comfortable. The most comfortable and enjoyable car is usually the one where all these attributes come together to create a homogeneous unit, ergo – the best compromise. It’s actually a fine line that the manufacturer has to walk, and few walk this line as well as Audi do. And that brings me to the topic of the latest discussions in our office — the brand-new Audi S5 Sportback.
