Production version sketches leaked on the web
Nissan’s next generation small car, based on the new ‘V’ platform, may have been slated for an Indian launch in May 2010, but the leaked official drawings that have surfaced on the web have already answered some eagerly asked questions regarding its future design direction. Contrary to previously stylized design sketches, the production version is more subdued and adopts a slightly conservative design theme, but with added functionality and character in every respect.
The front and rear overhangs are more pronounced and there is a distinct bulge in the bonnet now. The front, with its goggle-eyed headlamps and larger side-by-side air intakes, is reminiscent of the FIAT Punto and the BMW Mini. At the back, the Micra follows conventional hatchback styling norms with its chunky C-pillars and short rear doors. Nissan Design Director, Shiro Nakamura has stated that the new Micra has adopted a more conventional and aggressive or sporty look that was necessary to appeal to male buyers. Motive power is likely to come from 1.0 and 1.2-litre direct injection petrol engines but there is also widespread speculation that a 1.6-litre performance variant with 200bhp will be available for overseas market.Â
This car will be manufactured in India, Thailand, China, USA and one more country. To brings costs down, it will have 80% localization and might use a few powertrain parts from China. The ‘V’ platform will be around 50% lighter than its predecessor and will be open for use by Renault. Nissan also confirms that the version has been heavily engineered for Indian use.
