Ahead of its launch at the New York International Auto Show, the more powerful but very expected S63 AMG Coupé has information dripping around.

The new high-power sport-luxury version of the highly anticipated CL-replacing S-Class Coupé has emerged and it is a stonker. When the wraps were first taken off, the car was immediately perceived as an able successor which wore beautiful, elegant lines and yet stirred up enough excitement to make it a worthy and desirable sporty car, albeit with the weight of luxury keeping performance in check. Really, now?

The new AMG version packs in the 5.5-litre twin-turbo V8 motor from the E63 AMG S model no less, and that means 585 PS and a barely contained 900 Nm of torque – as much as the old Maybach – on tap from extremely low engine speeds. The S Coupé needs the grunt though, for its design promises stellar performance even for a huge Mercedes-Benz flagship luxury coupé. Yes, we expect the weight to be around the two-tonne mark, if not more (the old CL63 AMG weighed over 2.2 tonnes). There are subtle changes to the exterior in the form of reworked bumpers and more pronounced side skirts, all of which help keep the air-flow at its optimum at all sorts of speeds.

Nonetheless, expect bespoke luxury and AMG elements, the finest material and, needless to elaborate, the big, powerful twin-turbo V8 and effortless 7-speed GTronic automatic doing duty to deliver the best of both luxury and sport in the new S63 AMG Coupé. What about negatives? Fuel consumption will be on par with the best around, but quite possibly, the only thing holding it back would be its price tag; considering the options you have on the table in that ballpark.
