Diesel Power: Mercedes-Benz C 220 d

Combined CO2 emissions: 133-123 g/km

The new C 220 d was also present, albeit in Estate guise. The highlight of this model is, of course, the all-new “OM654 D20” 1,950-cc four-cylinder turbo-diesel. First seen in the new E-Class, it replaces the ageing but still potent 2,143-cc four-pot oil-burner. Where the old one made 170 PS, the new C 220 d makes 194 PS, with the same 400 Nm of peak torque. This will be their model offering that leads the charge in India.

The advanced diesel engine uses common-rail direct injection system, now in its fourth generation, with pressures of up to 2,050 bar. The exhaust treatment and after-treatment systems, including AdBlue-based selective catalytic reduction, are more efficient thanks to a near-engine configuration, with low heat loss and excellent operating conditions.

A short drive around Gonnesweiler in Germany was all it took to see the potential of one of the most popular avatars of the C-Class here in India. The revised cabin and plush seating work well with the new engine to provide a potent feel, with the availability of torque nicely managed by the nine-speed ‘box. We expect Mercedes-Benz India to offer a choice of trims for the diesel C.

The more potent C 300 d is also on the cards, with the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel motor turned up to 245 PS and 500 Nm; matching the peak torque of the outgoing C 250 d, while providing 41 more horses.
