Maruti Suzuki India Limited have introduced a mild-hybrid diesel version of their popular sedan, the Ciaz SHVS (Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki), from Rs 8.23 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi).
The new Ciaz propulsion unit is based on the 1.3-litre DDiS turbo-diesel unit from the current car and replaces the diesel model with immediate effect. You still get 90 PS and 200 Nm, but there are some additions to make it even more efficient and driveable than it already is: the integrated starter generator (ISG) with torque assist, the energy recovery system (ERS), the beefed-up battery, and the intelligent idle start/stop system. The ARAI-certified figure of 26.21 km/l is now bumped up to 28.09 km/l following these additions that will allow the engine to shut off when the car comes to a standstill, and instantly come back to life when needed. There will be a reduction in fuel consumption, yes, but how much? For the real-world figures, await the details from our road test.
The new Ciaz is offered with a driver air bag as standard across all five variants: VDi, VDi O, VDi+, ZDi and ZDi+. Dual front airbags, ABS and EBD will be a part of the equipment list on the higher trim levels. Since its launch last year, the Ciaz has captured the hearts of many buyers with its generous space, easy-to-drive nature and efficient motoring characteristics.
Our only crib would be the lack of adjustable head-rests at the rear, and, as always, the wish for a little more power. Seeing as the S-Cross already has the 1.6-litre DDiS 320 motor under its bonnet, and that the Ciaz is not a sub-four-metre car, we’re simply putting two and two together on our wishlist. Look forward to our detailed road test soon.

VDi: Rs 8.23 lakh
VDi(O): Rs 8.38 lakh
VDi+: Rs 8.82 lakh
