If rumours online are to be believed, Jaguar are considering a straight-six motor instead of the supercharged V6 for the F-Type sports car.
Jaguar are supposedly working on a new straight-six petrol engine to replace the 3.0-litre supercharged V6 in the F-Type. The first thing that springs to mind is, of course, the E-Type, with its iconic 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated six. An in-line engine seems more appropriate for the nature of the sports car, and Jaguar are well aware of this fact. The F-Type will probably put out similar power figures and even be just as quick, but the difference will be in the delivery, and that is what defines the experience.
The Jaguar F-Type is presently available as a convertible or a coupé, with a supercharged 3.0 V6 with 340 PS or 380 PS, manual or automatic, two- or four-wheel drive. The supercharged V8 with 550 PS is also available. (Which we’ve driven, here…)
BMW have always stuck with straight-six engine for their cars, most of them anyway, and there’s no reason for them to look elsewhere, save for downsizing and economy. Mercedes are also making the switch to in-line six-cylinder engines in the new E-Class. The E-Class Coupé and Cabriolet derivatives will also get these engines. Of course, the SL-Class is the natural competitor for the Jaguar F-Type and if it also gets those straight sixes plonked in, it will be game on! Stay tuned for more on this development.
So, Jaguar, we’d like ours in British Racing Green, please.
