Home / Features / A Milestone 19 Years of the Maruti Suzuki Swift

Making a sporty and exciting all-round hatchback even better takes special effort and Maruti Suzuki has attempted just that with the fourth-generation Swift.

The styling may seem familiar but it is an all-new car with bold new styling elements. The new grille and headlamp design flanking it are positioned on a pronounced central line which flows into a gorgeous shoulder line and wraps up at the tail in the sharp new C-shaped tail-lamp clusters. The contrast black roof in this dual-tone example along with the snazzy alloy wheels are standout elements. The essence of the Swift was in its compact dimensions and sporty design lines with the proportions enough to contain a generous cabin volume and integrate the latest safety features. All of these have clearly been achieved.

Inside, the layout is swanky and modern with a good mix of material and surfaces. The blend of modern elements with some classic touches is something to be appreciated, and which will be, especially by enthusiast drivers. The layout is well thought-out and every set of controls is easily accessible. There is a lot of new kit, too, in this all-new model. The most eye-catching ones are, of course, the 9.0-inch SmartPlay Pro+ centre touchscreen infotainment system and the beautiful analogue driver instrument cluster with crafted red needles on black dials with white lettering. It really hits the details out of the park. The cabin feels spacious but has a sporty vibe to it. The black theme and elements, with superb seats and an inviting driving position are the other things which will find favour with many.

The Swift has always been a fun car to drive and I am happy to report that this one follows up on that aspect well. The new ‘Z’ series 1.2-litre engine offers good power and has a punchy mid-range that keeps excitement and engagement levels high. It is brisk, handles very well, and feels involving to drive. The light pedal action and steering feel make it easy to get used to and convenient to drive in the city. The ride quality and refinement are standout attributes as well. Even the way the doors shut, and the sound they make, feels evolved. Out on the open highway, it proves that it is indeed both smooth and efficient, with double-digit fuel economy figures that pleasantly surprise; and certainly reinforces the Maruti Suzuki connection.

The equipment list has been significantly enhanced with automatic climate control, smartphone connectivity, intuitive displays and cruise control, all of which make life on the move easier and much safer. The space inside for both front and rear occupants is plentiful. There is even a generous amount of boot volume for all sorts of bags and items. Practicality is another huge strong-point of the new Swift.

There were always many reasons love the Swift. Now, with the epic new Swift, there are many more reasons to get “Swifting”.

Over the years Aspi has driven and tested various generations of the Maruti Suzuki Swift and he shares his thoughts on the super successful hatchback.

The new Swift is really exciting to look at. The styling makes it seem very familiar and unmistakeably Swift yet appear modern and ready for the future. Inside, the cabin is well-equipped and there are a lot of modern creature comforts. I love the look of the dials and the comfort. The ergonomic seats and the space in the cabin truly belie its size. It’s compact but feels impactful. It really feels great to drive and the agility and responsiveness is excellent and makes for an engaging and fun drive.

There are many big changes that one needs to get in and drive to really get a feel for with a hands-on approach. Maruti Suzuki has raised the Swift’s game considerably. And it’s also as fuel efficient as it is peppy to drive, so kudos to the engineers and development team.”
