This is the last CLS with a naturally aspirated petrol V6 and we drove it for the final time before turbos take over

We all know that Germans are very good at being pioneers: be it automotive technology, precision engineering, manufacturing or just beer. They have a superb gift which, frankly, has helped most of us in many situations. Why this eulogy? Well, the car I am about to describe is something that Mercedes-Benz (Germans) pioneered in 2004. Yes, a decade ago they launched a car called the CLS Class, a four-door coupé. At a time when two-door coupés were the norm Mercedes-Benz thought out of the box and made the CLS, a sporty coupé with added practicality of a four-door sedan.
Recently, Mercedes-Benz India introduced the CLS350 Blue Efficiency in India and we drove it to see how good this car that started a new whole new segment globally really is.
Clearly, the CLS is a previous generation Merc. The company has introduced a newer, sleeker-looking CLS with a range of turbo-charged engines abroad; we will have to wait for some time before it comes to India. Until then you can have what is probably the last naturally aspirated CLS in the world, which the company launched recently.
Anyway, it is an attractive luxury car. It refreshed my memories of the SLS and the previous generation E-Class. Its headlamps in particular attract a lot of attention because of the unique placement of the LED. However, the most striking visual element that draws the most eyeballs is the profile of the CLS. The long and low stature, which features an intricate balance between the smooth-flowing lines, strong creases, big wheels, sculpted panels and a thick D-pillar give birth to a stunningly beautiful and elegant design. Adding more glamour to the whole equation are the gorgeous tail-lights. According to me, the CLS is one fine car that announces you as a person who is sporty, smart and, most importantly, sophisticated.
