Maruti Suzuki announced a significant discount in the price of the Jimny recently. It was met with great disapproval by those who had already bought one and with squeals of glee from those who were yet to make the purchase. While this drama unfolded, we were busy clocking miles in our long-term Jimny.
Logbook
Driven: 18,038 km
Like: Off-road ability
Dislike: Limited storage space
Over the past few months, this SUV has taken me through 18 states of our country and, during that time, I was on the road for days on end; covering anywhere between 350 and 500 kilometres per day. That was 10-12 hours on the road; cruising on highways, crawling in city traffic, and powering over unruly terrain.
Predictably, the Jimny was singularly impressive in most off-road situations but that is not the highlight of this report. My appreciation is directed towards the all-round capability of this SUV. During our travels, each day had at least a few surprises but regardless of what situation we placed it in, the Jimny was always by our side. After crossing nine states, we did have the car serviced and Maruti Suzuki were quick to resolve the only problem we had at that time; a minor steering wheel alignment issue.
After that service, another nine states and a few thousand kilometres went by. To this day, there has not been a squeak or rattle that needed looking at. Like many, we were sceptical about this car’s highway manners but it proved more than capable of cruising comfortably at 120 km/h when necessary. Furthermore, it had a way of making even the poorest of roads exciting.
In our next report, we will give you a first-hand account of this SUV’s prowess off the road.
