Iniesta may have waved a tearful goodbye to his club career at Barcelona, but that hasn’t stopped Spanish National Team Coach Julen Lopetegui from including the midfield magician into his side for Russia. A seasoned campaigner and scorer of the goal that won Spain the World Cup back in 2010, Iniesta’s impact on this year’s competition can’t be underestimated. We expect big things from Spain with him at the heart of the team.
His Wheels: Iniesta drives a Bugatti Veyron, among other cars, and how fitting is that? A one-time record maker that may have been left behind by younger models but is still a force to be reckoned with in its own right.
Engine: 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16
Power: 1,200 PS
Torque: 1,500 Nm
Transmission: Seven-speed dual-clutch automatic
0-100 km/h: 2.5 seconds
So, these are the 11 players that we think will cause explosive moments of excitement for footy fans at the World Cup and carry their teams to triumph in the tournament. We could not have a bench, though, so here are our substitutes:
Mohammed Salah: He may have had a record-breaking season at Liverpool, but in Egypt, he’ll have to make do with team-mates who aren’t quite at the same technical level and that is likely to cost him in terms of national team success.
James Rodríguez: 2014’s Golden Boot winner he may be, but it’s doubtful that all the stars will align for him to pull off the feat again this time around.
Marco Reus: The young German tyro is definitely one to watch, but he might not be able to emerge from the shadows of his more successful team-mates.
