The Kylaq harnesses the proven 1.0 TSI engine, a turbo-petrol motor which delivers 115 hp and 178 Nm in its potent current form—higher numbers than even the 2.0 MPI engine from the first Octavia in India! The torque-converter automatic helps deliver a velvet-gloved punch which brings both quick acceleration as well as an evident and consistent surge of power that sends occupants deeper into their seats as the revs build.

When it comes to performance, having a quick-shifting transmission is the soul of the drive, with the engine being the heart. And, here, Skoda has another solution which emphatically answers enthusiast demands—the dual-clutch automatic “DirectShift Gearbox” or “DSG”.

The seven-speed DSG automatic is nothing short of legendary. The technology used for this gearbox, with two shafts and two clutches, one each for odd and even fears, enables quick shifts to the tune of 150 milliseconds—just a tenth-and-a-half of a second. That quick response and sharpness is precisely what led to this seven-speed DSG automatic being used in the mighty Bugatti Veyron, also under the wide umbrella of the parent group. With genes like that, there is no question that Skoda is being simply clever and only bringing in the best.

Paired with the extremely advanced, powerful and refined 1.5 TSI petrol engine, the DSG is put to good use. The engine itself is well-balanced tuned to provide power in an appealing arc that keeps the excitement going when demanded of it. Yet, when driven in a relaxed manner, it can deactivate half the cylinders and run in a highly efficient mode. This is ideal for coasting when covering many miles and helps maximise fuel efficiency.

What’s more, the Škoda Kylaq compact SUV, Kushaq mid-size SUV and Slavia sedan are all proudly made in India, engineered at a state-of-the-art facility in Chakan on the outskirts of Pune. The tremendous attention to detail and zero tolerance towards defects makes these cars amongst the best in the country, comparable to much more expensive fully imported models. The rigorous testing they undergo, not just in India, but the world over, ensures that even compact models such as the Kylaq, are ready for anything.
