The MG ZS EV is the second mid-size offering, sitting between the sub-four-metre Tata Nexon EV, the 4.1-metre Hyundai Kona Electric, and the larger and way more expensive 4.7-metre Mercedes EQC. Yes, I’ll paint the lot with the same brush, why not? The ZS EV’s price tag is about Rs 5 lakh more than the top-spec Nexon Ziptron, but only about Rs 20k less than the Kona. That said, the Kona may be smaller in size, but the fit-and-finish — as with all modern Hyundai cars — is hard to fault. The simplistic interior in the ZS, with its mix of knobs and buttons, is welcome. The large dual-pane sunroof is another big plus; especially for those who love to watch the rain. There are several other useful features that the ZS EV packs that make it feel just as… well, normal as a conventional combustion-engine car.
The MG ZS EV, in this higher “Exclusive” trim level, packs smart entry with push-button start/stop, a six-way powered driver seat, cruise control, automatic headlamps, rain-sensing automatic front wipers, and even a PM 2.5 filter for fine particulate matter to make for cleaner cabin air. The highlight, of course, is the slew of connected features. More than 60 features are available in the ZS EV thanks to its connected design as well as Wi-Fi connectivity. These include an embedded SIM card that enables over-the-air system updates, navigation, geofencing for up to 100 km, remote vehicle control, e-call emergency calling, i-Call button for concierge-like assistance, status check, and smart alerts. Other benefits include a handy “find my car” and even real-time weather updates.
The range needs to be discussed, particularly for potential buyers with range anxiety. The read-out is more or less completely accurate and — a victim of anxiety far too often myself — I didn’t have a burning doubt. That said, it’s best to plan your journeys. Figure out distance, factor in traffic and climate — should you need the air-conditioning on high or off altogether. The process of getting a move on from standstill is where the most energy goes. Once momentum is gained, there isn’t much of a power demand.
The MG ZS EV is priced at Rs 23.58 lakh, with just registration processing fees and insurance to be dealt with in states that don’t levy a road tax on electrics. It can be a genuinely great everyday car and, if the commute isn’t too long, it can handle a week’s worth of driving or a weekend getaway with the family with ease. Did I mention the huge boot and split-folding rear seat? It’s highly practical and the silence makes for more relaxed driving, too. Hard not to like, in this day and age.
