The pace car rolls off ahead. I’m in ‘Sport’, so the Huracán should behave. The first lap is about getting comfortable, yes, but not exactly. Exit the pit-lane and into the first right-hander and the grip is evident. Turn two is a quick left-hander. Hard on the brakes and into a long right-hand turn three that leads to the back straight. A slight quiver as I step on it, then the four Pirellis stick. Third, fourth, fifth, up to 261 km/h — it flashes on the display. Soon the car in front grows too large too fast, so I stamp on the brakes, yanking on the left paddle. The Huracán storms into the right hander, following the S-bend and into the parabolica. The steering feedback is precise, the feel just firm enough to let my foot stay on the gas, the grip from the tyres far from peak, though. A quick left-right over the elevation change and the drop towards the final corner leads on to the main straight.
A flick of the switch on the steering wheel from ‘Sport’ to ‘Corsa’ and we power on. Incomprehensibly, 160, 180, 200 km/h happen so quickly, before I know it, it’s hard on the brakes again. The back straight arrives, and I gun it. Amidst the glorious exhaust note of the 10 cylinders on song, smile plastered on my face, the Liquid Crystal font shows 2-6-6. The sound is ferocious as I lift off and then stomp on the brakes. This time, the parabolica doesn’t slow me down as much: invariably, a test of my limits rather than the car’s. Staying on the power better, the tail of the pace car is a couple of car lengths ahead as we head back in the pits.
The ‘Corsa’ or track mode changes the character of the Huracán. It’s more agile, more exciting, and, yet, more unforgiving. It lets fear actually have a say in the whole experience, especially when entering a corner too hot, tyres whispering a hint of disconnect. There are very few times every sense feels alive, and this V10 supercar lets them do just that. It does rock you like a Huracán.
